Participates in a Canadian commercial and cultural exhibition entitled Visages du Canada held at the Grands Magasins du Louvre in Paris and organized under auspices of the Canadian Embassy in France (Écrits I, p. 45; (Gagnon, 1978, p. 499; correct Gagnon 1988 who dates the exhibition in 1956 Voir p. 472).

Participates in the exhibition Transferences. Recent Paintings by Commonwealth Artists Working in Europe held at the Zemmer Gallery in London (Écrits I, p. 45); Borduas shows Barbacane, 1957, listed as number 10 (Gagnon, 1978, p. 500).

June 27 - August 25

Participates in the summer exhibition organized by the City of Montreal entitled Quelques peintres de Montréal, presented at the Hélène-de-Champlain restaurant. Borduas exhibits Noeuds et colonnes, 1958 under number 5 and Étude noir et blanc, (195?) under number 6 (Gagnon 1978, p. 500).

July

Short stay in Düsseldorf in the company of Lou Camus in relation to the Paul-Émile Borduas exhibition, held at the Alfred Schmela Gallery (Écrits I, p. 45). The titles of the works presented are unknown but we do know, by way of a price list, the dates and dimensions of the works that were shown. There were six paintings from 1955, two paintings from 1956, one painting from 1957 and one painting from 1958 (Gagnon 1978, p. 500-501).

Late July

Meets with Bernard Ostiguy for a week-end in Étables-sur-mer before leaving on vacation (Écrits I, p. 45).

July - August

On vacation with the Camus’ at Mimizan-Place, in the Landes region (Écrits I, p. 45).

August 19 - 25

Short stay in Switzerland. Returns to Paris on the 25th, after passing through Yverdon (August 19); is disappointed because he is not able to settle in France permanently (Écrits I, p. 45).

September 4 - November 2

Participates in the Art in Canada. A Canadian Portfolio exhibition, held at the Dallas Museum for Contemporary Arts (Écrits I, p. 45); Borduas shows Bercements silencieux, 1956, (Gagnon 1978, p. 501).
